Ghana Music Awards – The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) is an awards scheme designed to celebrate the works and creative contributors of the Ghanaian music industry. With its first edition in the year 2000, the VGMA remains the longest running annual award scheme in West Africa, promoting the people, the culture and the music. Over the years, the award scheme has grown into a festival, with the following distinct events – Nominees Announcement Party, Xperience (Nominees) Jam, Industry Awards Night, Main Awards Night, and VGMA Music Summit.
There are over 30 award categories, with the following as the top 5 – New Artiste of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Artiste of the Year. Award winners are determined by votes from the Board (Honorary Awards), or votes from the Board & Academy Members (Technical Awards), or the Board, the Academy and the Public (Popular Award categories). The event is brought to you by Vodafone as the lead sponsor, TV3 as the local Television Station, DSTV as the Africa TV partner, MTV Base as the online partner, and KPMG as its event statisticians.
Ghana’s first beauty show to be aired as reality series, with first edition airing in 2003. The 12 to 13 week reality show, is open to 18 to 25 year olds, and currently has the highest youth following on social media. From an open call that features 100s of ladies, the numbers are reduced through a series of weekly tasks in charity works, cooking, business pitch, photoshoot, fitness test, cultural knowledge, fashion sense, and speech delivery amongst others.
Finally, the top 10 most deserving delegates are selected to participate in the live event at the finale. The finale is a night of glitz and glam, where all delegates bring their ‘A’ game on, in the quest to win the car, the cash and the crown. The queen embarks on a charity project of impacting society throughout her year of reign. These are captured in her final speech during the handing over at the event finale of the incoming queen.
Ghana’s foremost STAND UP comedy brand. From its inception in 2004, the program has grown to become the BIGGEST and most consistent comedy brand in the country. This “MUST ATTEND” event on the Ghanaian social calendar is an end of year delight, featuring the best in standup comedy and music.
The program happens every year on the 26th of December, Boxing Day. So far, 30 successful shows have been produced, with some years having two editions. The platform has featured comedy giants in and out of Ghana including Basket Mouth, Bovi, Akpororo, Lekzy DeComic, OB Amponsah, DKB, Klint De Drunk, Khemical, Jacinta, Foster Romanus, and more.
